The Sonata 'Pathétique' needs no introduction; its memorable themes and dramatic qualities have ensured its enduring popularity. The 'Moonlight' Sonata, another huge favourite, showcases Beethoven's imaginative genius. Resembling a fantasy, it begins unusally with a slow movement and ends on a ferocious, virtuosic note, encompassing a gamut of unbridled emotion along the way. The 'Appassionata' Sonata, from the middle period of Beethoven's life, is a stern test of virtuosity and stamina for any pianist, and among the most technically challenging. Finally, the penultimate Sonata in A-flat, Op. 110 displays lyrical beauty and a sublime fugue. Together, these piano sonatas have helped cement Beethoven's status as the greatest composer in the genre.
