THE SOUND OF MUSIC 1965, Dir: Robert Wise, 174 minutes (plus 10 min intermission), Colour, 4K DCP (PG) Starring Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Peggy Wood “The hills are alive…” One of the best-loved musicals of all time finally comes to Capitol Theatre!  Based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, the Austrian former-nun and governess of the von Trapp children, who taught them to sing, married their widower father, before fleeing Austria in 1938 during the Nazi annexation. This extraordinary story had already been adapted into two German films, before becoming a Broadway smash hit, and finally this Hollywood classic in 1965. Julie Andrews, fresh off Mary Poppins (1963) and My Fair Lady (1964), was a perfect fit for the sincere, conflicted Maria – with music and songs by powerhouse team Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, an excellent supporting turn by Canadian stage actor Christopher Plummer, and a screenplay by Ernest Lehman (who wrote North By Northwest), who aimed to make the story as visually exciting as possible. Director Robert Wise filmed exteriors on location in the Austrian Alps and Salzburg (where the real events had taken place) on an epic scale. There’s a plentitude of classic songs, including the title song, Maria, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, My Favorite Things, Edelweiss and So Long, Farewell.  The Sound of Music was released as a 70mm ‘Roadshow’ picture and was an enormous hit (the most successful film of all time for some years), won major Oscars, and has become an iconic film for three generations so far. It shows no sign of losing its joyous, emotional appeal.
