This film is presented as part of SFS Showcase #60. SFS Showcase is a continuing series of specially-curated monthly screenings of new releases from the international festival circuits making their Singapore premieres, featuring an eclectic selection of films with a focus on creating conversations, challenging assumptions and opening hearts and minds to the diverse narratives of the world. Check out our past Showcase titles: https://letterboxd.com/sfs/list/you-only-get-to-watch-these-once-on-the-big/ Director: Itab Azzam, Jack Macinnes Runtime: 105 mins Country: Germany, Syrian Arab Republic Language: Arabic, German Rating: NC16 Awards: Winner - Directing Award & Audience Award, World Cinema Documentary (2026 Sundance Film Festival) Filmed over 10 years, one girl’s epic journey from Syria to Germany and back again. She and her family navigate war, exile, and heartbreak in a foreign land, illuminating the complexities of the refugee experience. Programmer's Note: One in a Million may seem to revisit familiar territory: the Syrian civil war, already documented in films such as Last Men in Aleppo (2017) and For Sama (2019). But this 10-year portrait of a displaced Syrian family seeking refuge in Germany feels like Boyhood meets The Odyssey —following a naïve, hopeful girl as she grows into a strong woman, while loosely evoking the long journey of exile and the dream of returning home to Syria after Bashar al-Assad's fall in 2024. Patient and insightful, it confronts questions of cultural assimilation, gender, and fractured identities with eye-opening self-reflexivity. (Eternality Tan, Vice-Chair & Programming Director)
