About the Programme What does it mean, for an individual and for a society, to tell stories or write about the natural world? In this panel discussion, three literary voices from across poetry, Indigenous cultural preservation, and activism come together to explore the role of storytelling in our relationship with the natural world today. The conversation will move between the personal and the political: what it means to read and write about the environment, how the written word can invite us to reconnect or reckon with the world around us, and what stories beg to be told today. Expect a wide-ranging and timely discussion with short readings and book recommendations of poetry and prose that have shaped each speaker's relationship with the environment. About the Speakers Chrystal Ho (panellist) is the author of Elsewhere, the Cosmos Cracks (AFTERIMAGE, 2025), a 2024 Gaudy Boy Poetry Book Prize finalist. A writer of poetry and nonfiction, she was a former Global Writing & Speaking Fellow at NYU Shanghai and a 2022-3 National Library Creative Resident. Her work, which explores myth, language, and how we tell stories about the natural world, particularly through the lenses of history and ekphrasis, have been published in PR&TA, Kopi Break, OFZOOS, Portside Review, and BiblioAsia, among others. Firdaus Sani (panellist) is an arts and culture practitioner, community leader, and Founder and Director of Orang Laut SG and The Black Sampan. A fourth-generation Orang Laut descendant, his work centres on Indigenous cultural preservation, community engagement, and shaping inclusive cultural narratives in Singapore and the region. Drawing on Indigenous knowledge and lived experience, Firdaus explores the intersections of culture, heritage, sustainability, and our relationship with the environment. He has delivered a TEDxYouth talk on sustainability and was recognised in Prestige Magazine’s 40 Under 40 for his leadership in culture, advocacy, and the arts. Kristian-Marc Paul (moderator) is an activist and writer. He is the co-editor of Brown is Redacted: Reflecting on Race in Singapore (2022), an anthology on minority race narratives in Singapore. He has written for Channel News Asia, Jom, and Mekong Review and was a contributing author to We Are Not The Enemy: The Practice of Advocacy in Singapore (2024). Kristian also facilitates intergroup dialogues and partnering with various organisations to run community discussions on masculinity and male allyship.
