About the Event In an attention economy where screens and digital media compete constantly for young people’s attention, how can we nurture engaged, critical readers? Join our speakers for the launch of the Reading Futures Study project report, The State of Teen Reading: How School Matters. The report offers insights into adolescent readers’ profiles, preferences, and reading habits, with a focus on implications for educators, librarians, parents, publishers, and others committed to supporting teen reading. Hear from Associate Professor Loh Chin Ee (NIE, NTU), Emeritus Professor Naomi Baron (author of Reader Bot: What Happens When AI Reads and Why It Matters), and moderator William Phuan of the Singapore Book Council as they explore what the data reveals and what it means for anyone invested in the future of reading. Speakers and Discussants 1) Presenter: Principal Investigator Associate Professor Loh Chin Ee, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University Associate Professor Loh Chin Ee is Associate Dean (Partnerships) at the Office for Research at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University. Her research focuses on young people’s reading at the intersection of globalisation and technological changes as well as the role of school libraries in fostering reading for pleasure and lifelong learning. Website: https://www.lohchinee.com/ 2) Discussant: Emeritus Professor Naomi Baron, The American University (Author of Reader Bot: What Happens When AI Reads and Why It Matters) Naomi Baron is Professor Emerita at The American University. Her research interests include language and technology, reading, first language acquisition, the relationship between speech and writing, the history and structure of English, and higher education. She is the author of various books including How We Read Now. 3) Moderator: Mr William Phuan, Executive Director, Singapore Book Council Mr William Phuan is Executive Director at the Singapore Book Council. He was formerly the Director of The Arts House and Programme Director of the New York Asian American International Film Festival.
