Dogs from difficult backgrounds often display fear, anxiety or reactivity — not because they are "bad dogs", but because these are survival behaviours shaped by an uncertain or painful past. A heart for rescued animals may inspire someone to adopt, but love alone is not always enough. When challenges arise, families may feel overwhelmed and seek quick fixes, or worse, surrender the dog — deepening its fear and insecurity, and restarting the cycle of rescue and rehoming. In this talk, hear from voices in the field for why rescue must go beyond saving a dog from its immediate circumstances. It calls for greater education before and after adoption, realistic expectations, and compassionate behaviour support. When adopters are equipped with the right knowledge, they are better prepared to make informed decisions and remain committed through difficult periods.
