About the Programme The Abilities Unlocked Series spotlights the lived experiences, skills, and talents of persons with disabilities, strengthening self-advocacy through inclusive programmes. This interactive workshop introduces participants to Deaf culture, communication norms, and practical sign language skills that can support more inclusive and meaningful everyday interactions with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals. Through a combination of hands-on sign language practice, facilitated group activities, and role-play exercises, participants will learn commonly used signs and explore effective ways of communicating beyond spoken language. The workshop will also provide insights into Deaf culture and etiquette, helping participants better understand different communication preferences and build confidence when interacting with members of the Deaf community. No prior knowledge of sign language is required. By the end of the session, participants will gain greater awareness of Deaf culture and inclusive communication practices, as well as practical sign language skills that they can apply in everyday situations. The programme is suitable for adults of all backgrounds, including persons with disabilities, who are interested in learning more about Deaf culture and accessible communication.
