In today’s doom and gloom about AI, climate, and the future of humanity, why are readers and audiences turning to hopeful speculative science fiction (SSF)? Join us as we explore the appeal of works like The Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells and works by Becky Chambers, and their positive and speculative portrayals of robots and human connection. About the Speakers Victor Fernando R. Ocampo is the author of numerous short stories, as well as the International Rubery Book Award shortlisted The Infinite Library and Other Stories (Math Paper Press, 2017 ; US edition: Gaudy Boy, 2021) and Here be Dragons (Canvas Press, 2015), which won the Romeo Forbes Children’s Story Award in 2012. A second collection will be released in 2027. His play-by-email interactive fiction piece “The Book of Red Shadows” was debuted at the Singapore Writers Festival in 2020 and a prequel was released in 2026. He is a fellow at the Milford Science Fiction Writers’ Conference (UK) and the Cinemalaya Ricky Lee Film Scriptwriting Workshop, as well as a Jalan Besar writer-in-residence at Sing Lit Station (2020/2021). Victor is also a technology consultant specializing in Business Development, Product Management, and Science Fiction prototyping. He specializes in telling stories to describe and explore the implications of futuristic technologies and the social structures enabled by them. He is also the Co-Chair of the Decentralized Identity Foundation APAC special interest group, an engineering-driven organization focused on developing the foundational elements necessary to establish an open ecosystem for decentralized identity. Yi Torng Lim is a public librarian at the National Library Board with a deep interest in solarpunk as a literary genre. In an era of climate crisis, she believes that the fictional worlds we imagine can materialise into worlds we might inhabit. Outside of her day job, Yi Torng can be found reading, tending to a permaculture garden, plotting her next craft/upcycling project and dreaming of regenerative, collective futures. Tanvi Gupta (moderator) is a self-proclaimed book-polygamist, tea lover and animal enthusiast. With a cup of tea in one hand and a novel in the other, you'll often find her lost in a literary wonderland, blissfully unaware of the chaos that comes with dealing with actual people. About Worth the Hype? series Worth the Hype? is a literary arts series that spotlights popular works of contemporary world fiction and asks the titular question: are they worth the hype?
