About the Programme Enter the alternative to K-Healing Fiction: K-Horror. Frequent readers of translated fiction will recognise names like Bora Chung and Monika Kim at the forefront of these rising genres. But is K-Horror your usual ghost story, or does it reveal something more unsettling about the anxieties of everyday Korean urban life? What overlaps might the genre have with science fiction, thrillers, or even magical realism? Join us as we explore how literary horror and thrillers differ from the K-dramas and cinema, and what new readers might find surprising or rewarding about picking up these books. We'll also consider how these stories function as social commentary, and what they illuminate about Korean society for international audiences. About the Speakers Gene Png is a literary translator and illustrator based in Seoul. She was awarded the Grand Prize in Poetry at the 53rd The Korea Times’ Translation Awards, and was the National Centre for Writing’s Korean Prose Mentee in 2023 where she was mentored by Anton Hur. Her translation of Cheon Seonran’s The Midnight Shift (Bloomsbury) was published in 2025. Wen-yi Lee is the Nebula Award-nominated author of When They Burned the Butterfly, Where Rivers Made the Gods, and The Dark We Know, and editor of forthcoming horror anthology The Kids Came Back Wrong. Her work often speculates on history, troubling women, and ghosts, and has also appeared in venues like Lightspeed, Uncanny, Best American Science Fiction & Fantasy, and Best New Singaporean Short Stories. Currently based in Singapore, she has been supported by the Clarion West Octavia E Butler Scholarship, the Singapore National Arts Council, and the UK National Centre for Writing. Each online panel will centre on bestselling works of literary fiction and comprise three speakers who will discuss the literary merits and commercial appeal of the book, author or genre.
