About the Programme A murder happens...and it’s time for us to cosy up with our favourite hot drink. The cosy mystery has made a striking comeback with popular screen adaptations of The Thursday Murder Club and the Hercule Poirot franchise based on Agatha Christie novels, as well as original screenplays like The Residence and the Knives Out franchise. But what exactly separates them from grittier crime thrillers? Join us as we unpack the tropes that define the genre, explore what's driving its resurgence in contemporary film and television, and consider what Asian writers bring to a genre long dominated by Western authors. About the Speakers Lauren Ho is a Malaysian author who writes across genres for both children and adults. Shaped by a life lived across three continents, she explores themes of identity, culture, relationships, and belonging in her work. She currently divides her time between Singapore and France with her family. In her free time, she enjoys performing stand-up comedy and singing karaoke—one of which her family enthusiastically supports. You can find her on IG and TikTok at @HelloLaurenHo Shamini Flint is celebrated for her diverse body of work, ranging from crime thrillers to children’s books. She is best known for her Inspector Singh Investigates series, published by Little, Brown and translated widely. These novels explore complex societal issues, blending sharp humour with insightful commentary on culture and justice. Inspector Singh has been optioned for TV with Britbox International and is to star Sanjeev Bhaskar in the titular role. Tanvi Gupta (moderator) is a self-proclaimed book-polygamist, tea lover and animal enthusiast. With a cup of tea in one hand and a novel in the other, you'll often find her lost in a literary wonderland, blissfully unaware of the chaos that comes with dealing with actual people. About Worth the Hype? series Worth the Hype? is a literary arts series that spotlights popular works of contemporary world fiction and asks the titular question: are they worth the hype? Each online panel will centre on bestselling works of literary fiction and comprise three speakers who will discuss the literary merits and commercial appeal of the book, author or genre. The last onsite session is a special book party for book lovers to rant and rave about a hyped title that season!
