About the Event Not all screen time is created equal. In a world of endless scrolling, constant notifications and digital overload, what does meaningful and intentional screen use look like? Through research-informed insights and practical examples, our experts will discuss how screen-based activities can support or hinder attention, learning and reflection, and explore the role of digital reading through e-books, longform articles and libraries. Participants will gain practical strategies for reducing digital fatigue, cultivating healthier screen habits, and improving focus in an increasingly distracted world. About the Speakers and Moderator Speaker: Assoc Prof Loh Chin Ee Associate Dean (Impact & Partnerships) Office for Research, National Institute of Education, Singapore Loh Chin Ee is Associate Professor at the English Language and Literature Department and Associate Dean (Impact & Partnerships) at the Office for Research (OfR) at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Her primary research interest is in literacy and equity, with a focus on adolescent reading and school libraries as well as place-based literature education. Speaker: Assoc Prof Jean Liu Associate Professor Health and Social Sciences Cluster, Singapore Institute of Technology Jean Liu is Associate Professor of Psychology at the Singapore Institute of Technology. Her research centres on the science of technology use, including how screentime affects wellbeing and everyday social interactions. She was the lead author of an interagency “Positive Use Guide” on digital devices for young users, and served on the expert panel for national guidelines on screentime and mental wellbeing. She also hosted the Channel NewsAsia series “Byte the Habit” on screen use in families. Dr Liu previously consulted for the World Health Organization, and her research insights have been discussed in parliament and in the media. Moderator: Dr Munirah Shaik Kadir Education Research Scientist Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice, National Institute of Education, Singapore Munirah Shaik Kadir is an Education Research Scientist and Lecturer at the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice, NIE, Singapore. A former physics and mathematics teacher, she has over 20 years of educational research experience. Her research focuses on positive education, science education, motivation, and wellbeing. About the series Education Exchange returns with a new season that turns the spotlight on one of the most pressing issues in contemporary life: screen time. As digital devices and online platforms become deeply embedded in how we learn, work and connect, questions about how we engage with screens meaningfully and responsibly are becoming increasingly important for individuals and families alike. Through a series of public talks, this edition of Education Exchange aims to explore how people of different ages can develop healthier, more purposeful relationships with technology, drawing on research insights and real-world experiences to support informed and balanced digital habits. This programme series is organised by the National Institute of Education (NIE) and National Library Board (NLB). Registration and Attendance Registration is required for this programme.
